All Manner of War
Historical Fiction | Family Memoir
A sweeping tale of family, service, and perseverance inspired by the real stories of the author's great-grandfather and his three brothers as they leave their Alabama home in 1861 to serve in the Confederate Army in the devastating War between the States.
“If this is not a blockbuster, then there is no such thing!” — Polly Fairly, after reading All Manner of War
Sending four sons to war while meeting the challenges of the farm on the hill they cherish, an Alabama family experiences the War Between the States from different viewpoints, facing all manner of war on all fronts and at home. They are changed forever through the long five years of the war, coming face-to-face with so many pivotal events of the times. As much as the political circumstances of the day drive their actions and decisions, they come to realize they are a family connected by a common cause, that their family is the most important gift they have, to be treasured and protected. No matter who the enemy is at the door or the challenges they face, the common theme is the family spirit and driving desire to be whole again on the hill they call home.
As each son joins the Confederate Army to serve with General Lee in Virginia, ride with the cavalry in Tennessee, or suffer the tedium of fort life on the gulf, each experiences the time in similar but different ways. The family at home must handle the burden of a blockaded existence while holding out hope and prayers for the sons to return home, while losses from the hill mount by the score. It is a story filled with desperation, fear, anger, and exhilaration; a journey through every emotion of the human soul.
Journey of the brothers as told in All Manner of War. John in blue, James Davis in red, and Mac in green.

Path of the Patriots (The American Genesis Series Book 1)
Follow the Manwaring, Murphy, Phippen, and Eaton families through an engrossing narrative of America’s beginnings—from the decision to leave all they had behind to join the first colonies through revolution, trial, and transformation of the American spirit.
They came seeking freedom; what they built will demand sacrifice from every generation that follows.
My Vision: I am writing the American Genesis Series because history is not abstract to me. It feels personal, something I have inherited, and it will always be unfinished. My work has always centered on families, on the quiet choices real people make as history unfolds around them, and on how that history affects them when they have little control over the outcomes. I am drawn to moments when national events intersect with private life, especially the lives of those whose labor, endurance, and moral clarity rarely appear in official records. As a historical fiction writer, my goal is not to recreate events but to trace their repercussions.

Hail! Gets a Job
Hail! Gets a Job follows the adventures of Hail!, a spirited Border Collie who is convinced that, to be a “real” dog, she must have a significant job herding sheep—just like the dogs she’s heard about in stories. The trouble is, Hail! doesn’t live on a farm. She tries her best to herd everything from ducks in the pond to children at recess, with hilariously chaotic results. Along the way, Hail! discovers that there are many ways for a dog to have a purpose: fetching lost toys, cheering up neighbors, protecting the backyard, and even making her family laugh. With warmth, humor, and lively illustrations, this story shows young readers that everyone—dogs and kids alike—has special gifts to share and that she already has the most essential “job”—being loved.

Then, they try frisbee, where Hail! and Wrigley leap, flip, and soar through the air, amazed by the thrill of the chase. At dock diving practice, they learn the splashier the better, flying off the dock with boundless joy. Each new sport challenges Hail! and Wrigley to be brave, determined, and playful in enjoying each sport with heart, energy, and a wagging tail. This fun-filled tale inspires kids to try new things, embrace their talents, and celebrate the joy of play.
